The Legend
Nandin
Nandin (Nandi) is the sacred bull and mount (vāhana) of Shiva in Hinduism. He is also the guardian of the gate of Mount Kailāsa — the abode of Shiva and the goddess Pārvatī — and is revered as the deity who embodies devotion, purity, steadfastness, and dharma. Why a bull? In Hindu belief the bull signifies fertility, patience, strength, sacrifice, and selfless service. Nandin thus represents the devotee who offers his life in service to Shiva with complete and faithful sincerity. Nandin's duties are to serve as the mount of Shiva, to guard the gate of Mount Kailāsa, to lead Shiva's host of attendants (the gaṇa), and to receive the prayers of the faithful.
